Next week, February 26-March 2nd, is Read Across America Week (in honor of Dr. Suess's birthday on March 2nd). At McKinley we like to do a week long celebration of books and Dr. Suess which a theme for each day. The schedule is as follows:
Monday- Fox in Socks Day: Wear crazy or mis-matched socks Tuesday- The Lorax moustache day: Come wearing a stick-on or drawn-on moustache Wednesday- Parade of Books: Choose a favorite book and dress up as a character or in some other way to represent the book. Make sure to bring the book as part of the costume. The students will join a special guest in a whole school parade around the school at 8:45. There are many good ideas online for book costumes that don't require you to purchase anything. Get creative! Thursday- Drop everything and read day: Students will carry their favorite books around for all indoor activities in preparation for "drop everything and read" announcements that will occur throughout the day. Friday- Dr. Suess trivia announcements: Throughout the day Dr. Suess book quotes will be announced over the loudspeaker and the first class to call with the name of the book wins prizes! On Wednesday, December 13th, we will be taking a walking field trip to visit Grocery Outlet and Petsmart. The purpose of the field trip is to build students' understanding of what is in our community and to encourage them to think about why we need places like these. Students will also be discussing the difference between 'wants' and 'needs' and will be searching the two stores for examples of each of these things.
If you have not yet returned the field trip permission slip, please be sure to do so before the 13th. On the day of the field trip, make sure your child is wearing weather appropriate clothing and is on time to school. We will be leaving promptly at 8:45 am and will return at about 10:00 am. We will be reading several versions of The Gingerbread Man in class over the coming week and a half. To support our learning experience, I am asking each of my kindergarten students to design a Gingerbread character. They can be dressed up in any way your child wants, from a superhero, to a princess, to an animal. Please be creative! We will be hanging our Gingerbread people up in the classroom. Feel free to use a variety of materials, such as paint, yarn, stickers, material, colored paper, glitter, etc. The more creative the design the better! The base for your gingerbread person will be sent home Monday, December 11th and is due back on December 18th.
Next week, November 6-9, is spirit week at McKinley. The goal of this spirit week is to encourage timeliness and good attendance. See the handouts page for a description of what is happening each day.
McKinley students will be collecting change to donate to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico the week of October 16th-20th. Students are encouraged to bring in spare change to donate to this effort. All donations will be given to the Red Cross at the end of the week.
This year Beaverton School District is using a new online math program called DreamBox. Each student has their own account, and can play fun math games that are tailored to their specific needs. As their teacher, I can see their progress and get reports on what each student needs more practice doing, and what they have already mastered. You can access it at home with your child's username and password. Their username is their first name, and the password for all of my students is: look. Access the login page by clicking on the link below.
The next few weeks are full of important events. Mark your calendars!

Additionally, students are invited to bring an object from home for each color to glue to our color posters. These objects will NOT be returned. Items to consider looking for include a picture cut out of a magazine, a piece of fabric or paper, or other craft items like colored popsicle sticks or pipe cleaners. Feel free to get creative!
